Jewish men began to create stores and businesses in Colorado as soon as they arrived. Some of the stores turned into national chains, such as Samsonite and May D & F. Women often helped their husbands in business, but sometimes had businesses on their own, particularly when they were widowed.
Annie Orlinsky Miller ran her own grocery to help out her family financially. Ida Cook played a major role in operating the Cook’s Russian Baths. Ruth Mosko, who was born and raised in Denver, married Izzy Handler and started the Mattel Toy Company, maker of the ubiquitous “Barbie Doll.”. Hannah Levy and her brother Jack created the Fashion Bar Corporation. Lillian “Billie” Stein, a trumpeter, led the Harmony Girls jazz band and toured the nation. Irene Miller Stein was a respected Colorado artist.
